For more than 22 percent of people in Germany, racism is a daily reality. It shapes lives, limits opportunities, and shows that this issue affects everyone, not just the margins of society.
In Berlin, Naima Nazir and Fily Mihan envisioned a place where the BIPoC community could gather and belong. In 2020, ROOTS was founded, and in 2022 it became a non-profit. The project began as a response to the isolation and lack of support many experienced in the city. It grew from a desire to create spaces where people can simply be themselves.
ROOTS’ mission is guided by the belief that creativity, well-being, and knowledge have the greatest impact when shared. Its free programs We Move, We Create, and We Learn strengthen the BIPoC community while addressing everyday racism and discrimination. Each program sparks positive momentum, fosters thriving environments, and deepens connections.
Since 2023, we have partnered with ROOTS to support these initiatives. Together, we have expanded access to workshops and creative spaces for BIPoC communities in Berlin. ROOTS offers activities that respond directly to community needs. Workshops focus on movement and fitness, creative expression such as songwriting and DJing, and other ways to nurture well-being. Each session is welcoming and empowering, helping participants make their voices heard. One workshop participant said, “It is about cultivating this space of warmth and connection.” DJ workshops for FLINTA of colour provide a safe environment to learn, practice, and collaborate with established DJs. Participants explore equipment, build skills, and connect with others while using affirmation cards to encourage confidence, creativity, and reflection. These sessions foster self-expression and a sense of belonging.
The impact goes beyond the workshops. Participants form support networks, discover new skills, and access spaces that help manage the emotional weight of race-based experiences. One participant shared, “Thank you for creating this safe space for us to reconnect, ground ourselves, process our emotions, and be there for each other.”
Since 2020, ROOTS has hosted more than 45 creative events with over 1,600 participants and over 80 sports and well-being sessions welcoming more than 2,300 individuals. The programs have also supported over 150 BIPoC freelancers and small businesses through collaborations and bookings. Images courtesy of The Original Nigisti and Gideon Smith Paul.
